What it is

  • Does: HMAC challenge–response over USB (press GP4 to confirm), binds the puck to a bay, then shows live freeze/flood mood on the onboard LED.
  • Does not: replace probes, Overview, Alerts, or the insurance claims pack. It is a presence key and mood light for a bay you already monitor.

Setup

Claim and drive moods from Bay Buddy after you connect your ThermalTrace account.

  1. Flash claim-puck CircuitPython onto an RP2040-Zero. Wire a momentary button from GP4 to GND.
  2. Connect at least one probe (or demo feed) on Devices so the bay has readings. Give devices a matching space label (e.g. garage).
  3. Install Bay Buddy, sign in, plug in the puck, then use Claim this bay and press the button when the LED turns yellow.
  4. Optionally Drive puck mood so the LED follows GET /api/bays/<bay>/mood.

What it does, what it does not replace, and how it fits ThermalTrace.

What is a ThermalTrace claim puck?

A Waveshare RP2040-Zero running claim-puck firmware. It proves physical presence when you claim a bay (button on GP4), then shows Bay Buddy freeze/flood moods on its LED. It is not a temperature probe. For a Wi‑Fi DS18B20 on Pico W / Pico 2 W, see thermaltrace.dev/about/pico-w-ingest.

Do I need Bay Buddy?

Bay Buddy is the easiest way to claim and drive the puck after you sign in. You can also use the host CLI in the thermaltrace-claim-puck repo with companion access and refresh tokens.

Is this the same as the Claims pack?

No. Claims pack is a printable insurance evidence PDF on thermaltrace.dev/claims-pack. Claim puck is a hardware presence key and mood light.
